UNSW Research

Celebrating the next generation of research leaders who will change our world

From powering our future and fighting antibiotic resistance to designing smart cities and helping refugees overcome trauma, we recognise the achievements of UNSW’s 20 Rising Stars.

Using contemporary design to capture diversity

20 Rising Stars who will change our world is the third and final edition of Research@UNSW — a series of booklets for the global academic community. Our brief was to present the innovative and inspiring work of the campus’s up-and-coming research leaders. As an emerging design studio, it was fitting we were invited to showcase these researchers, and also a privilege to follow the footsteps of accomplished studios before us.

The next wave of researchers

A dynamic illustration was engineered and partnered with our progressive use of bold colour, conveying the next generation of researchers with a youthful energy. We collaborated with photographer Quentin Jones, with portraits taken in a range of environments, both on campus and in the field.

Perpetuating research opportunities

The publication was printed in vibrant fluorescent inks and layers of varnish, using new print processes we developed with printers, Lindsay Yates. An accompanying website was designed to promote the publication, with our seamless wave illustration animated and incorporated into the site’s header, representing the longterm changes anticipated by these young researchers.

We recognise our rising stars as the future of our innovative and pioneering research reputation. They are on the trajectory to make UNSW an innovation powerhouse.
