Ian Burch is no ordinary pastry chef. He transforms flour and sugar into architectural wonders, and sculpts chocolate into edible masterpieces. Introducing the world of the Sugarsmith & Chocolatemason.

Where passion meets perfection

From breathtaking wedding cakes to jaw-dropping chocolate installations, Ian Burch is a celebrated chef who pushes the boundaries of patisserie for luxury events, with plans to expand into an eponymous product range.

Through a brand discovery workshop, we developed a creative brief that envisioned a sophisticated identity infused with a cheeky twist, reflecting Ian’s sense of humour. Inspired by nature, his work seamlessly combines cutting-edge techniques with the precision of a master craftsman.

Whisking words for naming

The strapline Sugarsmith & Chocolatemason is a fantastical job title, highlighting Chef Burch’s dual expertise and pays homage to traditional trades such as stonemasonry and blacksmithing.

At the heart of the logo is a pair of monkeys (a witty reclamation of the kitchen taunt “sponge monkey”) whose tails are subtly echoed in the logo’s letterforms.

Modern but classic, with a really strong premium feel. A great brand identity that I’m sure will last for years to come and be envied by others!

The details in the mix

A bespoke heraldic crest, scalable to various sizes, was designed to honour Ian’s English roots. It incorporates elements inspired by his craft, such as cake decorations and pastry tools.

A custom pattern featuring a ‘birch’ tree motif, a nod to Ian’s surname, was created for paper lining his chocolate boxes. We pressed gold foil accents into velvety papers in rich chocolate tones to enhance the premium feel. The colour palette, drawn from dessert ingredients, evokes a mouthwatering anticipation of Ian’s showstopping creations.

The project achieved a Silver in the Graphic category at CreativePool’s Annual 2025.

I had the basic ideas I wanted for my brand identity, and these creative wizards went to work and brought my vision to life. I would certainly recommend Another Colour to anyone. Their customer service and creative skills are exceptional. They are such a friendly, professional group of people.
